I recently graduated from the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Leadership program, Class of ‘24. This outstanding program has been educating local business leaders about the opportunities, challenges and vital issues affecting the greater Manchester community for over thirty years.

Over the course of ten months, along with forty other local professionals, we took a deep dive into our community’s biggest challenges as well as its victories.

My eyes are wide open! Manchester, like many cities, has had significant struggles with drug abuse and homelessness. However, what you don’t see is the strong coordination of public and private services and funding to support individuals and families who face challenges as well as empowering children in efforts to break the cycle. Programs like Girls at Work and the Boys and Girls Club offer priceless opportunities for children to feel supported and empowered while providing a safe space to be a kid.

The day spent with the Manchester Police department and ride along experience was the most impressionable for me. It left me with a greater appreciation of how our police officers show up for us every day. They are out on the streets, putting their lives on the line, making split second, sometimes life or death decisions. There is no option to work from home or meet up with a friend during a lunch break. The level of hypervigilance is far beyond what I can understand, there is little room for error.

As you can imagine, the demands of this job can have a significant impact on mental health. I applaud the efforts of Manchester Police Chief Aldenberg, who takes care of his police officers, by making sure they have the time off and psychological support they need.

I’m grateful to work for a business that values giving back to our community. Looking at Manchester through a different lens and seeing how individuals and organizations lift and support each other and the community inspire me to continue to do my part, however small.

Thank you Bartley Financial for giving me the opportunity to take part in this amazing program!
